Timing & Tracking Contractions
Instructions for timing and tracking contractions:
4 minutes between contractions starting, 1 minute long contractions, with this going on for at least 1 hour. 4-1-1
Think of contractions as coming in waves, with the body relaxing naturally between them.
Time from the start of one contraction to the start of the next.
Take Notes- write down the time contractions start, how much time lapses between contractions starting, and how many minutes of rest were experienced between contractions.
Call your midwife, doctor, or head to the hospital when there are;
4-5 minutes of rest between contractions,
contractions last about 1 minute each,
and this has gone on for at least 1 hour.
That is the 4-1-1 Rule.
⭐️Bonus tip- If you are helping someone track contractions, consider coming up with a hand signal to communicate contractions starting.
Help the birthing person with timing and note taking, adhering to the 4-1-1 Rule, and making sure phone(s) are charged and ready to call your Dr., Midwife, or HCP.
Offer them water and food (fresh is encouraged, like berries, fruit, or their favorite veggie) during the Resting phases.
⭐ ️Bonus tip- Keep your doula posted! Getting a hold of them at the first signs of labor allows them time to prepare to support you.
